Gerald “Guts” Andersen of Owatonna, age 83, passed away on Friday January 31, 2020 at Homestead Hospice House after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease.
Friends may greet the family from 5-7:00 PM Friday, February 7, 2020 at the Brick Meger Funeral Home and one hour prior to the memorial service at church. Memorial service will be 11:00 AM Saturday, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Owatonna. Military honors will be provided by the Steele County Funeral Unit.
Guts was born in Rochester on a snowy Christmas day in 1936 to parents F. Edward Andersen and Dora (Stanley) Andersen. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard from 1955 until his honorable discharge in 1959. From there he joined the Owatonna Fire Department rising to the rank of Captain until his retirement in 1987. In 1966, he began employment for the Owatonna Public Utilities where he worked for 32 years.
Guts was a member of the American Legion, Trinity Lutheran Church, and of Alcoholics Anonymous with 29 years of sobriety. As his nickname suggests, he was a spirited, fun loving person. He will be remembered for his sense of humor, as a loyal friend and a loving father and grandfather.
He is survived by his sister Judith Ann (Norman) Krueger, the mother of his children Alice Sorenson, daughters Michelle (Rod) Johnson of Byron, MN and Rebecca (Tom) Coakley of Parker, CO and four grandchildren Alyssa and Ryan Johnson, McKenna and Dillon Coakley. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, John Andersen.
To honor his belief in helping others, he has donated his body to the Mayo Clinic Bequest program. Memorials may be made to West Hills A.A., 605 Florence Ave, Owatonna MN 55060.
