Minerva 'Minnie' Cassels

November 19, 1937 ~ January 5, 2019 (age 81)

Minerva Joy "Minnie" Cassels, 81, passed away peacefully on January 5th, 2019 at Morningstar Memory Care in Glendale, AZ from complications of dementia. Minnie was born November 19th, 1937 in Columbia, SD to Harold and Luretta Richardson. One of 9 children, she was raised on a farm in Houghton, SD in a loving, tight-knit family. Her father nicknamed her “Skeeter” at a young age due to her energetic nature. 

She married Donald H. Cassels on May 29, 1958. They started their life together in Owatonna, MN when Donald took a job with Federated Insurance. A few years later, they moved to Sioux Falls, SD where Donald ran a sporting goods store for a few years. Later, they returned to Owatonna where they made their home for the next 50 years. Minnie’s life’s work was raising her three children. She was a loving, beautiful, unselfish and loyal friend, mother and grandmother. Anyone who met her immediately felt her warm heart and generous nature. 

Her hobbies included playing bridge on a regular basis with her close, neighborhood friends, cribbage with her friends downtown, bowling, knitting and in her spare time, carting her children to their various sporting events and activities. 

Minnie is survived by her three children Steven (Sheryl) Cassels of Livermore, CA, Michael Cassels of Sioux Falls, SD and Kathryn Cassels of Phoenix, AZ. Grandchildren John Gillis and his significant other, Megan Pflaum of Mankato, MN, Sierra and significant other Andrew Bone and Shane Cassels all of Livermore CA and Dylan Cassels of Sioux Falls, SD, great grandchildren, Nathan and Nora Gillis of Mankato, MN, Sisters Maralyn (Ron) Hoops of Ferney, SD, Lila Richardson of Sturgis, SD and Ruby Larson of rural Groton, SD, Brothers Howard (Gerry) Richardson of Fargo, ND and John Richardson of Aberdeen SD Sister-In-Laws Donna Cassels of Faulkton, SD and Jane Cassels of Naperville, ILL.

She was preceded in death by her husband Donald, parents Harold and Luretta Richardson, brothers James and David Richardson, sister Donna Richardson and great grandson Caden Cassels.

A celebration of life is scheduled for Saturday, January 12th from 3:00-4:00 pm at Brick-Meger Funeral Home, 1603 Austin Rd in Owatonna, MN. In lieu of flowers memorial cards only please.
